Veteran Grave Markers

Lackawanna County Veterans Affairs director David Eisele has requested that all residents and the volunteers from area VFW’s and American Legions who help take care of the cemeteries contact him at 570-963-6778 to arrange the return of damaged veterans grave markers.

Golf Tournament

The 13th annual Mike Shimko Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, June 2, at the Pine Hills Country Club in Taylor. There will be a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start. The format will be captain and mate. Registration fee is $75, which includes green fees, cart, buffet dinner and cash prizes. The dinner will be held at St. George’s Center, 743 S. Keyser Ave. in Taylor. Payment for the tournament is due on or before May 25. For anyone wishing to sponsor a hole, the price is $50 per hole. Those interested can call 570-430-6749 or 570-562-2157. All proceeds are going to: Uplifting Athletes, Penn State University, in memory of Mike Shimko. Make checks payable to “Penn State Uplifting Athletes.”

Spring Musical

The second-grade classes from Riverside Elementary West School will perform their musical titled “Welcome to the Jungle” on Tuesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Riverside Jr.-Sr. High School in Taylor. More than 100 students will perform.

Dean’s List

Mikaela Buntz of Moosic has been named to the Elmira College dean’s list for the winter term.

College Grads

• A total of 1,205 students recently received degrees from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania for undergraduate and graduate students. Among them were:

Rhiannon Avvisato of Avoca, who will receive a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish; Carla Bellenzeni of Old Forge, who will receive a bachelor of science degree in psychology; Anthony Halat of Dupont, who will receive a bachelor of arts in communication; Madison Petro of Moosic, who will receive a bachelor of arts degree in English; Gus Turonis of Avoca, who will receive a master of science in exercise science; and Marisa Zambetti of Old Forge, who will receive a bachelor of science in early childhood education.

• Approximately 1,183 students were eligible to walk in Coastal Carolina University’s graduation exercises recently.

Among those students who graduated: Jonathan Kelley from Old Forge, who earned a bachelor of science in business administration in management.
