Kindergarten Registration

• Registration at the Old Forge School District for the 2016-17 school year for kindergarten will be held at the high school auditorium Tuesday, March 15, and Thursday, March 17, 9-11 a.m. and 1-2:45 p.m. on both days. Children are eligible for kindergarten in the school district if they are 5 years of age on or before Sept. 30.

Parents must bring proof of the student’s age (contact the school for a list of documents that are acceptable), proof that the student resides in the district (contact the school for a list of documents that are acceptable) and complete immunization records (contact the school for a list of immunizatons that are required).

• Registration in the Riverside School District for 2016-17 school year will be held at West Elementary Tuesday, March 8, 5:30-7:30 p.m. and at East Elementary Thursday, March 10, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Child must be 5 years old by Sept. 1.

College Grads

• Wilkes University awarded 226 doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees to students graduating after the completion of the fall 2015 semester. Among them were Mia Sallavanti of Old Forge, who received a bachelor of science in biology; and Natalie Smirne of Avoca, who received a bachelor of arts in psychology.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

The Old Forge School District announces that parent-teacher conferences will be held Thursday, Feb. 25, 6-8 p.m. High school students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be served to all students. Elementary students will be dismissed starting at 1:10 p.m. Lunch will be served to all students.

Softball Meeting

12U Valley Petunia League will hold its second meeting for the 2016 season on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post No. 411, 508 Church St, Jessup. Any organization that would like to participate in the league should attend.

Real Estate Taxes

Old Forge Tax Collector Gary Propersi would like to inform all real estate property owners that the 2016 Old Forge Borough taxes will be mailed during the week of Feb. 15. Rebate period as shown on statement will be in effect until April 15. Payments can be made daily at the Peoples Security Bank in Old Forge or can be mailed (a receipt will be sent to those who enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope). Any property owner not receiving a tax bill is asked to contact the tax office at 570-457-6408 ext 5. Office hours are Mondays, 5-6:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., or by appointment.

Food Sale

The Moosic Lions Club will hold its annual Lenten tuna hoagie and homemade red clam chowder sale Fridays through March 25, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Moosic Youth Center. Hoagies will cost $4 and clam chowder will be $3 per pint or $6 per quart. Proceeds from the sale will help fund the club’s scholarship as well as other projects.

Covered Dish Cabaret

The Old Forge High School Drama Club will present a covered dish cabaret Saturday, Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m. featuring homemade food served by the Drama Club students in the school cafeteria. Then it’s into the theater and the same students will sing and dance. All proceeds go to the Drama Club.

Tickets to the dinner and the show are $10; for the show only tickets are $5 (show starts at 8 p.m.)

Sons of Italy

The Sons of Italy, Gloria Lodge No. 815, District 6, will having its monthly meeting Monday, Feb. 15, at 6:30 p.m. at the Arcaro & Genell banquet room.

Tax Assistance

(VITA) Program

Residents with household incomes of less than $54,000 in 2015 can receive free assistance completing their federal, state and local tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The free service is staffed by University of Scranton accounting students and numerous professional volunteers organized by the University and the United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties with the support of several local human service organizations.

The VITA service is available by appointment through March. Appointments can be made online at or by calling 570-504-0614.

Walk-in service without an appointment is also available in Brennan Hall on the University’s campus through March 16; and from March 29 to April 1, Mondays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Tuesdays noon to 5 p.m.; Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The full list of locations for the service and hours of operation is available by below or at

Residents using the VITA service are asked to bring the following items: a valid photo ID; all W2 Forms; all 1099 forms (interest, dividends, pensions); real estate tax receipts for rent/tax rebate; Form 8332 for non-custodial parents; Social Security numbers or Individual Tax Identification Numbers (ITIN) for all taxpayers and dependents; W-7 forms if appropriate; information related to income and expenses (business, rental properties, sale of stocks); a personal banking account check if direct deposit is desired; and any documentation related to health insurance for themselves and anyone on the tax return in 2015. Last year’s tax returns are also requested.
