The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Joey Gutowski of Old Forge and Old Forge High School has been chosen as the defensive performer of the week in football.
A junior defensive back, Gutowski had seven tackles, including five unassisted and 2.0 for lost yards, as well as an interception with a 36-yard return as Rensselaer defeated Buffalo State College, 44-14. One of his tackles for loss (4 yards) came on a third-and-one play in the first quarter and his interception and return set the Engineers up at the 27-yard line in the second quarter. RPI scored on the very next play to cap 14 points in a 21-second span for a 30-7 lead.
In four games, Gutowski has 17 tackles, including 11 unassisted and 2.0 for lost yards. He also has two interceptions and a pair of pass breakups in helping the Engineers to a 4-0 record and national rankings of 19th (AFCA) and 20th (D3football.com), respectively.
A business and management major, Gutowski entered the season having made four tackles (3 solo) in 13 contests in his first two years.
