The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Joey Gutowski of Old Forge and Old Forge High School has been chosen as the Defensive Performer of the Week in football.

The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Joey Gutowski of Old Forge and Old Forge High School has been chosen as the defensive performer of the week in football.

A junior defensive back, Gutowski had seven tackles, including five unassisted and 2.0 for lost yards, as well as an interception with a 36-yard return as Rensselaer defeated Buffalo State College, 44-14. One of his tackles for loss (4 yards) came on a third-and-one play in the first quarter and his interception and return set the Engineers up at the 27-yard line in the second quarter. RPI scored on the very next play to cap 14 points in a 21-second span for a 30-7 lead.

In four games, Gutowski has 17 tackles, including 11 unassisted and 2.0 for lost yards. He also has two interceptions and a pair of pass breakups in helping the Engineers to a 4-0 record and national rankings of 19th (AFCA) and 20th (D3football.com), respectively.

A business and management major, Gutowski entered the season having made four tackles (3 solo) in 13 contests in his first two years.
